Lip Flip vs Lip Filler … What is the difference?

Traditional Lip filler, also known as Dermal Filler, and a new treatment gaining popularity called a “Lip Flip” are both excellent options to enhance your lips.  Whether you are trying to achieve the perfect pout, fuller lips, or trying to hide a gummy smile, both treatment options can create any desired look you are trying to achieve. While considering both treatments, it is important to understand the differences between the two.

Lip Filler Using Dermal Filler

Lip Filler is a substance that is injected in the lips to add volume and create fuller and plumper lips. There are a variety of different fillers that usually made from hyaluronic acid (HA) or collagen. Hyaluronic acid is a natural occurring sugar-based cellular molecule or polysaccharide that exists in each individual person. HA is well-known for its lubricating properties and is used in the medical industry for ophthalmology, orthopedics, and wound dressings. Injectable dermal filler subtly plumps and enhances the natural shape of your lips. Dermal filler creates a more defined, full appearance and provides symmetry to unbalanced lips.

At Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery, we offer a variety of safe and FDA-approved dermal fillers that range from small molecule (for subtle improvement) to larger molecule (for more noticeable fullness) that can last 1 year or even longer.  Our most popular Lip Fillers are Juvederm XC,  Volbella, and Restylane.  There are specific fillers that are excellent for softening those fine lines around your mouth, adding volume to your lips and creating definition for your natural lip shape.  Choosing the filler that you would like is solely based on your facial features and your appearance goals.

What is a Lip Flip?

The “Lip Flip” is a procedure designed to make the upper lip appear fuller. Instead of filler, one of our expertly trained medical professionals will inject a small amount of Botox along the edges of your upper lip. Botox is used to paralyze muscles and encourages the top lip to relax and “flip” outwards, giving the subtle illusion of a fuller lip. This treatment can be used to hide gummy smiles and create an appearance of adding more volume to the lip without adding any volume.  Because the Lip Flip is done using Botox, the affect can last between 6-12 weeks, depending on the speed of your metabolism.  For people who are afraid of an “over puffed” look, a Lip Flip can be an excellent option.
