Why Should You Consider Transfeminine (Male to Female) Top Surgery?

Transfeminine or MTF (Male to Female) Top Surgery refers to individuals who were identified as male at birth and whose bodies continued to develop with male characteristics, but who personally identify with femininity or as a female.

Top Surgery is defined by a variety of procedures that alter the gender-related characteristics of the chest to appear less like the gender identity that the patient was assigned at birth. While some transfeminine patients identify as female, others identify on the feminine spectrum or as gender neutral. Generally, the individuals within this category who are interested in top surgery breast augmentations share the common, uncomfortable feeling that the breasts are missing.

While hormone therapy is limited in terms of breast growth and development, many transwomen and transfeminine people feel that breast augmentation is desired to best address their mind and body transformation. Dr. Chernoff understands that not all transgender people desire to undergo cosmetic surgery, however, for the many who do desire breast augmentation and other gender-confirming surgeries, it is comforting to know that the skilled and specialized expertise is there.

What Does Transfeminine (Male to Female) Top Surgery Involve?

Transfeminine Top Surgery is a very detailed process with several decisions that will need to be made to ensure optimal and satisfying results. The considerations are as follows:

Breast Implant Shape and Size

Breast implant size and shape are some of the most important decisions to make in terms of your body’s natural proportions. During your consultation process with Dr. Chernoff, you will be able to not only see the variety of implants we offer at Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery but also be able to feel the implants. The selection of implants includes gummy, teardrop, round, and many other shapes.

In doing so, you will have a much better idea of your final results. Our breast implant/augmentation patients are offered the highest quality silicone gel and saline breast implants. Dr. Chernoff will recommend a specific type and shape based on your goals, anatomy, skin elasticity, and existing breast tissue.

Top Surgery Preparation and Procedure

In preparation for surgery, the following steps are necessary for you to complete:

  • Lab testing
  • Medical evaluation
  • Adjustments to certain hormones or current medications
  • Stop smoking, if applicable
  • Stop taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements that may increase bleeding

Transfeminine top surgery is performed under general anesthesia and the procedure typically takes two hours. Scarring is minimal as Dr. Chernoff performs top surgery using a small incision.

Prior to any surgical procedure, Dr. Chernoff recommends that all of our patients read our Patient Guide for Plastic Surgery. This guide will explain the important points that all patients should think about as they consider a surgical procedure.

Top Surgery Aftercare

Immediately following your top surgery operation, gauze or bandages will be applied to your incisions in addition to a wrap-around elastic bandage to minimize swelling and support the breasts. The elastic bandage is removed the day after your surgery and a supportive bra will be provided to you to be worn in its place.

It is important to carefully follow the specific post-care instructions that are given; including, how to care for your surgical sites, medications, and when to follow up with Dr. Chernoff. Patients are advised not to worry as healing will continue for several weeks as swelling decreases and the breast shape improves. Over time, the breast implants will settle, and the incision scars will improve, although the scars will never completely disappear.

What Results Can I Expect from Transfeminine Top Surgery?

The final results of Transfeminine Top Surgery can help alleviate the feelings of gender dysphoria that some individuals experience.

At Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery, we understand that gender confirmation surgery is a deeply personal, important procedure that helps transgender people feel more comfortable in their bodies.
